2022 is now behind us and so here are some of my favourite images from last year. There are some client images that I cannot share for various reasons (Albums are not yet out, tours have not commenced, private celebrations and corporate events that not all involved want to share etc) but here are a collection of memorable photographs from 2022 and some thoughts on why some were chosen. Enjoy and have a fabulous 2023.

2022 a year in which after a 41 year wait i finally get to photograph the band that started it all for me in Madness, the reason that #Skacamera is among my Instagram tags. I have shot Bad Manners, The Selecter, (never The Specials and now never will after Terry Hall passed away this year) but never the nutty boys and they did not disappoint. I got to shoot Elbow too at Tunes in the Park in Port Eliot, two weddings for two close friends, Several cosplay events, not so many gigs but still very many including the last ever Rockfest organised by the now BEM recipient Cuz Cussen and an unforgettable gig (in the church in which my grandparents got married) by the amazing Alex Hart.

I shot the moon, at least twice, the Commonwealth baton relay, Tom Daley getting the keys to the city, some amazing street art and many , many musicians (most of whom are great friends) for the Box's After Dark exhibition. I shot the waterfront and Street art and some amazing shows for L S Drama workshops and plenty of actors headshots and portfolios. I shot a couple climate change demonstrations and plenty of Parkour but not as much Art or Art shows as in previous years. A few promo shoots for bands and of course the return of boxing.

A year on from the last professional boxing card in Plymouth, Greenstar Promotions, headed by local former boxer, cornerman and trainer Jack Green ushered in a New Era with a solid six fight card back at the Guildhall. An image of the year for me, from arguably the fight of the night. Lewis Everson in war mode made for an entertaining fight with a game opponent who tagged the heavy handed Devonport boxer a few times but ended up drowning in a turbulent fight that had so may rocky moments for the tough Middleton, it was surprising he lasted until the final round when Referee Lee Every jumped in ending the fight with the visiting fighter out on his feet. A highly anticipated return for action hungry fight fans from across Devon and Cornwall, and a welcome return for me, elbows on the ring apron of the square circle.

Most of what I do, even when it is in the studio, is about performance. It's not just about capturing the moment, but being mindful enough to recognise and record others living in their moment. The amazing Kat from L S Drama on a recent portfolio day, following in the footsteps of her big sister Stasia with a performance the studio could barely contain.

BELOW : Seth Lakeman plays the first ever live music gig at The Box in Plymouth 2022

Plymouth's Box, much more than a Museum and Art Gallery, played host to the west-country's own Seth Lakeman on Sunday 13 February as the last date on a nine day UK tour to support the release of his latest album the aptly titled 'Make your mark'. A performer and building we should all be incredibly proud to have here. This was the first ever live music event at the gallery and I was delighted to be asked to come along to film, write about and photograph it. With a performer like Seth it is important to try and capture some of that energy and movement and not just freeze it all like some museum statue with a high shutter speed.

This photograph taken in June in the car-park of a pub on the edge of the moor made me instantly think about De Niro asking his reflection “You talking to me?” in Taxi Driver. I tried to clap and distract the bird from attacking it's own phantom doppelganger but it was having none of it, and so I grabbed my camera and snapped this one instead.

Further up in the heart of Dartmoor earlier in March I spent some time photographing the swaling, and as controversial as it is, I have to admit watching anything burn, even if it is just gorse and scrub is great for a photographer who regularly likes to capture the drama of the light as it washes across the tors. To have fire, smoke and the silhouettes of the men shepherding the flames as well just adds to natures theatre.

Taken at the Iberian show in September at Exeter's Westpoint. Fleur Churchill's amazing event mixing the drama of flamenco and fado, the horses at the heart of the show and Nubs dramatic lighting, I would have kicked myself if I had failed to capture at least a handful of memorable images even though I was primarily there to film.

The end of year celebratory performance by the students and performers of Devon Pole Dance has always had a lot of Rock and Roll in it's veins but this year it threw it's head back and turned everything up to 11. The amazing Leanne Rainbow Pole Dance with a Cyprus Hill Vibe to blow away the cobwebs of winter.

Earlier in July on the way to watch Windjammer at The Lord High Admiral in Stonehouse I spotted an amazing rainbow looking like it was coming out of the Academy (Old Palace Theatre) in Plymouth and grabbed it hoping it was a sign that the old Duchess would be born again someday and continue the regeneration of what was one of the original three towns before the city was here.

Then in August my fourth grandchild, and third grandson was born at 10:20pm in the middle of the first day of the British Firework Championships. Welcome to the world Rowan, you certainly have great timing.
